Morocco
Morocco is a wine-producing country in North Africa, and as a result of more foreign investment since the 1990s, the country’s wine industry is seeing a bit of a rebirth and growth. Though most of the wine serves the domestic market, there’s a small export market for its high-quality wines as well. Morocco comprises five wine regions: the East, the Meknès/Fès region, the Northern Plain, the Rabat/Casablanca region, and the El Jadida region. Many of the vineyard plantings sit along the Atlantic coast, which provides cooling breezes. Thanks to this proximity, higher altitudes, and some cooling influences from the Atlas Mountains, the wine regions enjoy a relatively cool climate and can offset otherwise warm temperatures. Soil types are a blend of red and black clay, limestone, and schist (on some of the higher slopes). Production centres on primarily red wines, with plantings of Syrah, Carignan, Cinsault, Alicante, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot among the grape varieties. Taferielt is another black table-wine grape that’s indigenous to Morocco. The country is gaining a reputation for some highly elegant and intensely concentrated Syrah wines. White-grape varieties, including Clairette Blanche, Muscat, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, and Sauvignon Blanc also grow here.
