Hungary

Hungary is home to 22 wine regions, the most historic and acclaimed of which is Tokaj. In Tokaj, producers make the wine Tokaji, a sweet, amber-coloured dessert wine with concentrated sugars and strong acidity from dried, botrytised grapes. These famed wines are full-bodied and full of honeyed, nutty aromas and flavours. The primary grape variety in Hungary (and for Tokaji) is Furmint. Other grape varieties include Hárslevelű, Kékfrankos (the same as Austrian Blaufränkisch), and Chardonnay. After Hungary joined the European Union, it adopted a Protected Denomination of Origin/Protected Geographical Indication (PDO/PDI) system for its wine appellations. Law defines the varied styles of the Tokaji PDO, such as Aszú and Szamorodni. What’s more, since the 2013 vintage, Tokaji PDO wines must be bottled in the region. Zempléni is a PGI for wines made from other grapes, especially more traditional international varieties, as well as for inexpensive wines made at higher yields than the PDO permits. Hungary currently exports only 20% of its wine.

Tokaj

Tucked in the northeast corner of Hungary, Tokaj is one of the most celebrated and historic wine regions in not only the country but also the world. In the 1700s, the region created one of the first-ever appellation systems to denote which areas could use ‘Tokaj’ on their wines. These wines are the acclaimed Tokaji Aszú, sweet wines made from shrivelled grapes that have been affected by botrytis, or ‘noble rot’. For hundreds of years, these wines were wildly popular across the European continent – and with the nobility. Later, when communism took hold of Hungary, winemaking efforts instead concentrated on quantity – not quality. When the communist regime ended in 1989, Tokaj producers began to rebuild wine quality – and their reputation. And that acclaimed reputation stands today. Tokaj has a moderate continental climate, with warm summers and cold winters. However, forest-topped mountains help shelter the region from the most extreme cold temperatures. Planting the vineyards on slopes also helps decrease the risks from cold and frost. The Tokaji PDO allows for six grape varieties: Furmint, Hárslevelű, Sárga Muskotály, Zéta, Kabar, and Kövérszőlő. Classic Tokaji Aszú is deep-amber-coloured, with high acidity and low to medium alcohol content. On the nose, you’ll find intense aromas of orange peel, honey, and apricot. On the palate, expect these same citrus and honeyed notes, along with ginger and marzipan.
