Clos Marey‑Monge is a collection of different micro-climates and soil types. Each of our seven terroirs – Simone, Nicolas-Joseph, Grands Esprits, Chantrerie, 75 Rangs, Micault, and Émilie – is a different composition of limestone, iron-rich clay, alluvium and other minerals essential to Pinot Noir. Centuries of savoir-faire contribute to our knowledge of how to get the most from each plot and produce a blend that reveals the complexity of our wines each year.
Clos Marey-Monge sits on top of the Avant-Dheune Valley dejection cone, a geological structure that allows even greater Pinot Noir growing conditions to flourish. The cherished terroir of Pommard, and its 27 identified climats, have been cultivated and carefully preserved for thousands of years by the many protectors of the land. But it is the 150 million year history of the earth and dirt beneath these famed soils that has contributed most to Clos Marey-Monge’s enduring popularity.
The 4.81-hectare plot of Grands Esprits has large, round, rocky, limestone-rich soils planted between 1970 and 1980. It produces a straight Pinot Noir with firm tannins and potential for long aging. Occupying almost one-quarter of our vineyard’s overall area, the 220 rows of Grands Esprits is the most calcareous area in the Clos Marey-Monge.

France
Wine is being produced throughout France and has been done for over 2,500 years with certain Châteaux dating their history back to Roman times, around 6th Century BC. Ranking second in the world in per-capita consumption and first in total production quantity. More so than the overall quantity of wine is the quantity of truly great wines coming out of France makes the nation the envy of wine-making nations worldwide.
Two concepts pivotal to the higher end French wines, in particular, are the idea of 'terroir' and the Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) system. Terroir refers to the way the geography, geology and climate find their way into the glass, telling a story of the origin of the wine. The AOC was set up in 1935 and has the primary goal of protecting the authenticity of the wines and the livelihoods of the producers. Appellation rules strictly define which varieties of grapes and winemaking practices are approved for classification in each of France's several hundred geographically defined appellations, which can cover entire regions, individual villages or in some cases, like in Burgundy even specific vineyards.
Classic wine regions in France include Champagne (home of Champagne), Burgundy (Pinot Noir and Chardonnay), Bordeaux (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Petit Verdot), Alsace (Aromatic varietals), Loire Valley (Chenin Blanc, Crémant) and the Rhône Valley (Syrah, Grenache Mourvedre)
The Bordeaux classification of 1855 is still in use, as is the Sauternes and Barsac Classification of the same year. Wines from certain regions can be bought En Primeur, which is when the wine is sold prior to it being bottled.
Burgundy
Burgundy is undoubtedly the home of the finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnays in the world, where vineyards, or Domaines have been producing wines for over 2000 years. Burgundy is located in the North-east of France, an hours drive from Lyon and 2 hours from Paris. With over 100 appellations, or sub-regions (more than any other wine region) Burgundy is known for being the most terroir-oriented region in the World. The finest red wines of Burgundy are found in the Côte d'Or, a string of villages including Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin, Morey St Denis, Chambolle-Musigny, Vougeot, Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-St Georges.
There are flavours present in great Burgundys that are the envy of Pinot Noir producers worldwide. The elusive peacocks tail finish that goes on and on, and the pretty-elegance backed by Burgundy muscle is the goal of winemakers around the globe. The main levels in the Burgundy classifications, in descending order of quality, are: Grand crus, Premier crus, village appellations, and finally regional appellations. For the Chablis wines, a similar hierarchy of Grand Cru, Premier Cru and Village wines is used, plus Petit Chablis as a level below Village Chablis.
Gevrey-Chambertin
Gevrey-Chambertin is an important village Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) in the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy, France, exclusively for red wines (Pinot Noir). It is also the largest village in the Côte de Nuits and boasts some of Burgundy’s most acclaimed Grands Crus and Premiers Crus. The Gevrey-Chambertin Pinot Noir wines are bright-ruby-coloured in youth, gaining deeper hues with age. On the nose, expect berry fruits (strawberries, mulberries) and floral notes. With age, aromas of licorice, game, underbrush, leather, and fur develop. On the powerful palate, you’ll find well-balanced structure, velvety tannins, and ‘meaty’ texture. Generally, these wines have a reputation for being fuller-bodied and richer than some of their Burgundy counterparts. They have excellent potential for ageing.

Our philosophy is to always maintain a hands-off approach and allow nature to remain in control; we entrust the vintage to do the talking, not the winemaker or the business. The seven distinct, but complementary, terroir of Clos Marey-Monge are each hand-harvested, fermented, and aged separately, following a vinification process that employs as little human interference, or influence, as possible. It is only at the last possible moment that we step in and create a balanced blend of the seven terroir. Listening to the vintage’s peculiarities and requirements allows us to use our experience and intuition to select just the right percentages and proportions for the blend. Nothing else. The result is a vintage that always reflects the best of the land and Mother Nature, but is created with our signature style which emphasizes elegance, complexity and length. Scientists call it chemistry, we call it winemaking.
