Though historic records indicate that Uruguay, the second-smallest country in South America, made wine as far back as the … 1700s, it wasn’t until the massive influx of European immigrants – primarily Spanish and Italian – at the end of the 1800s that the country’s wine industry really got up and running. These immigrants brought grapevines – more than 80 varieties – from their home countries with them to their new home. These varieties included Barbera, Nebbiolo, Gamay, Cabernet Sauvi
