Caledonia Australis
The wines of Caledonia Australis are not mainstream to say the least, indeed they are far from it. Established in 1995, Caledonia Australis is the vision of a group of wine enthusiasts who wanted to make quality Burgundian style wines that expressed regionality, and produced with minimal intervention. The only grape varietals carefully crafted by this stellar winery are Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, sourced from two vineyards in Leongatha in the Gippsland region, Victoria.
To realise this Burgundian vision, winemaker Martin Williams was trusted with the task of crafting these beauties. Martin is not only a brave and intriguing winemaker, he is also a Master of Wine and holds degrees in Chemistry and Biochemisty. He has completed vintages in Europe, USA, Australia and New Zealand to broaden his winemaking skills before making the Caledonia Australis wines. These wines are quite an adventure. Martin uses traditional and modern winemaking techniques to make wine styles that are expressive, textured, well structured, funky and definitely out there!
