Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Blanc, Langhorne Creek, Great Southern

Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the most famous and widely planted red grape varieties in the world. It is immensely popular in Australia, where world-class wines are made in Coonawarra, Margaret River and the Yarra Valley. Each region has a distinctive character, but all tend to be more fruit-forward than those from France. Coonawarra has a distinct mint or Eucalypt aroma, Margaret River has a more tomato leaf character, while Yarra Valley is more elegant in style.

Its original home is Bordeaux, where it is the dominant grape on the left bank, Medoc and Graves. In Bordeaux, Cabernet Sauvignon tends to be blended with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and with small amounts of Malbec and Petit Verdot. In the New World, it is both blended and made as a straight varietal. Excellent wines are also produced in the Napa Valley and Chile's Maipo Valley. The grapes are thick-skinned providing the characteristic high tannins and deep colour. The Cabernet Sauvignon wines tend to show fragrant cassis, herbaceous, full-bodied with high acid.
Less than an hour drive south-east of Adelaide, you'll find the country town of Langhorne Creek. It's full of family winegrowers some who've been making wine in the area for up to six generations. It's most well known for producing red wines of high quality, in particular Cabernet and Shiraz.

Langhorne Creek experiences ocean breezes which moderate the otherwise warm climate. The town is on the banks of the north to south flowing Bremer River which flows on to Lake Alexandrina. The river frequently floods across the vineyards (particularly in winter) bringing up silts which contribute to the regions terroir.

Whilst it may still not be the most well known of South Australia's many wine regions, plenty of outstanding wine comes from there.
Set among the backdrop of Australia’s most majestic landmarks, the Great Southern Wine Region boasts an incredible size fit for both winemaker and enthusiast. With its five sub-regions of Denmark, Frankland River, Mount Barker, Porongurup and Albany, winemakers are treated to an abundance of unique soil types and weather conditions, while enthusiasts can enjoy an array of wine styles with something for every palate.

The region's most recent trends showcase just how popular it’s becoming. Wineries in the region are being blessed by the cooler climate which is conducive to the production of the extremely popular Australian Shiraz. Pinot Noir enthusiasts can also expect great things to happen with the southern climate and terroir being superb for wine production. On top of that, the region is also upping the ante in terms of competition, being among the best in Australia for Riesling, a fierce competitor to South Australia’s renowned Clare Valley.

You could almost say that wines and the Great Southern were made for each other!
