ASTING NOTES Single Vineyard La Pampa 1997 is distinguished by the complexity of its mingled black fruit and floral aromas. Good structure in the mouth with finely textured tannins, refreshing acidity, and notes of black fruit, black pepper and spices. The finish is elegant and lingering. VINEYARD NOTES The grapes were sourced from our La Pampa 1997 Estate, situated at 1,300 masl in the San Pablo GI, Uco Valley. Planted in 1997, this vineyard was one of the first in Mendoza at such an elevation. The ungrafted massal selection vines have been trellis-trained with vertical shoots and irrigated with pure Andes cordillera meltwater. The sandy soil has a depth of 25 cm with a prevalence of limestone-encrusted stones. The vineyard is sustainably managed and the climate is cool with wide thermal amplitude. The grapes were harvested on 6 and 7 April. VINTAGE REPORT The ‘16 -’17 growing season was warmer than the expected averages, with both high and low temperatures above those recorded in the past, which resulted in a shorter maturation period of the white varieties and a more progressive maturation of the red grapes. An October frost resulted in a significantly lower yield. Precipitation was in line with prior years but was greater than normal in April, though those rainfalls occurred towards the end of that month when most of the grapes had already been harvested, so fruit quality and health were unaffected. WINEMAKING REPORT The grapes were hand-picked and transported in 400-kg bins. Bunches were then selected and destemmed. For fermentation, 37 percent of the must was done in 7,000-litre foudres and 63 percent in 225-litre oak barrels. Cold pre-fermentation maceration was made at 10º-12ºC. The fermentation at 28°-29°C was initiated with selected yeasts, and remontage, délestage and punch down were employed for the foudres, and just punch down and the controlled introduction of oxygen using the cliqueur device for the barrels. Upon completion of post-fermentation maceration, the wines were racked and transferred to French oak barrels for spontaneous malolactic fermentation. After a period of six months, the wine was blended in stainless steel tanks then returned to barrels for approximately 10 additional months to complete their ageing.     "An exceptional Malbec from the Uco Valley, using grapes from a vineyard planted in 1997 at an altitude of 1,300 meters, and aged in used barrels for 16 months. The year and execution by oenologist José Galante’s team raise the bar. Dense purple in the glass. The intense but remarkably precise and delicate nose presents aromas of red currant and plum plus notes of jam, sandalwood, cigar box and hints of violet and herb.     "The 2017 Single Vineyard Malbec La Pampa was sourced from the estate vineyard in Los Árboles at 1,300 meters in altitude, planted with an ungrafted massal selection at 2,500 plants per hectare in 1997 on alluvial soils from the Las Tunas River in San Pablo. The wine is only 13.5% alcohol despite showing quite ripe on the nose, something that is consistent with the warmer year. It has a wild character and is stony and a tad riper than the Los Jabalíes, also from San Pablo but a little higher in altitude. It's powerful and has abundant tannins. 11,394 bottles were filled in July 2019. - Luis Gutiérrez"

Argentina

The wine industry in Argentina has had one of the fastest growth rates in the wine world and now claims to be the fifth largest wine producer in the world. Much like certain aspects of Argentine cuisine, the wine industry too has its roots in Spain. Vine cuttings were brought to Santiago del Estero in the 1600s. Up until the 1980s, Argentina was known for producing more 'quantity' wine over 'quality' wine, but that has changed with winemakers across the board lifting their game. There is no doubt that Malbec is the grape on which Argentina's international reputation as a wine-producing nation is founded. Whilst it is a difficult grape to grow, the climate and conditions around Mendoza and in particular the Uco Valley is ideally suited to producing world-class wine. The most popular varieties planted out in Argentina would be Bonarda, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, Sangiovese, Syrah and Tempranillo.

Mendoza

Mendoza is by far the largest wine region in Argentina. Located on a high-altitude plateau at the edge of the Andes Mountains, the province is responsible for roughly 70 percent of the country's annual wine production. The French grape variety Malbec has its New World home in the vineyards of Mendoza, producing red wines of great concentration and intensity.

The province lies on the western edge of Argentina, across the Andes Mountains from Chile. While the province is large (it covers a similar area to the state of New York), its viticultural land is clustered mainly in the northern part, just south of Mendoza City. Here, the regions of Lujan de Cuyo, Maipu and the Uco Valley are home to some of the biggest names in Argentinian wine.

This soil in this region is alluvial with rocky subsoil. It possesses sediments of sand, silt and clay. Its little organic matter restraints the grapevine’s growth and this results in excellent quality grapes suitable for winemaking. Malbec wines from this area hold outstanding features; red and violet tones with great intensity.

Tunuyan

Tunuyán is a city in the west of the province of Mendoza, Argentina, located on the western shore of the Tunuyán River approximately 80 km south from the provincial capital Mendoza and 100 km east of the Chilean border.

Along with the Tupungato Department and the San Carlos Department, it makes up the "Valle de Uco" region, which is famous in the Argentine wine industry for its important and modern vineyards and wineries.

Winemakers all over the world have recognised the region for its attractive climate, soil, and altitude combination. It is now one of Argentina's most important wine-growing and producing regions.
