Dottore (Doctor) Matteo Ascheri is not only the 5th generation owner and winemaker of his family estate (established 1880), he also runs a 4 star resort and traditional 'Osteria' (restaurant) next to the winery in Bra. In addition to this, Matteo is the head of the Consorzio di Barolo, which makes all decisions about the future of this unique and highly-regarded region. The Ascheri Barolo 'Sorano' is sourced entirely from one of the family's 3 vineyards. Grapes are macerated on skins for 15 days at about 30 degrees Celsius, with 60% of the wine having a completely submerged cap to extract tannin, colour and flavour. Ethereal bouquet; intense tar with a scent of dry flowers, underwood, leather, truffles and sweet spices. A rich palate; balance and mature tannins contribute to its harmony, distinction and intensity. A remarkably classy, austere wine, with exceptional richness and tipicity.

Bright, medium to deep brick-red colour, with a very savoury, earth and ironstone bouquet, very complex and loaded with dried herb and dried flower nuances, a trace of dried animal skins, the palate enormously intense, robustly full-bodied and massively powerful. It fills the entire mouth with flavour that lasts and lasts. A monumental Barolo - and stacked with detail.

Serralunga d’Alba. Tasted blind. Concentrated, mid ruby. Sweet and concentrated. Cherry compote on the nose and with a hint of leather. Generous and with a minerally edge. Supple cherry fruit with, again, a touch of leather. Good balance and with abundant fruit with good acidity and a layer of crunchy tannins, but does not possess the normal Serralunga tautness.

The warmer 2015 vintage shows through here, expressing the warmer, riper side of Barolo- black cherry jam, blackcurrants and rich black earth. Still retains the searing line of acidity but is more for enjoyment in the near future. Drink 2019-2027
