Dottore (Doctor) Matteo Ascheri is not only the 5th generation owner and winemaker of his family estate (established 1880), he also runs a 4 star resort and traditional 'Osteria' (restaurant) next to the winery in Bra. In addition to this, Matteo is the head of the Consorzio di Barolo, which makes all decisions about the future of this unique and highly-regarded region.
The Ascheri Barolo 'Sorano' is sourced entirely from one of the family's 3 vineyards. Grapes are macerated on skins for 15 days at about 30 degrees Celsius, with 60% of the wine having a completely submerged cap to extract tannin, colour and flavour. Ethereal bouquet; intense tar with a scent of dry flowers, underwood, leather, truffles and sweet spices. A rich palate; balance and mature tannins contribute to its harmony, distinction and intensity. A remarkably classy, austere wine, with exceptional richness and tipicity

Mark Faber
Very deep, dark and brooding. Sanguine, tarry but with gorgeous concentrated rose petal aromas. Blazing acidity, sinewy tannins, earthy, ferrous finish, everything tuned up but kept finely in balance. What a wine!

Deep brick-red colour showing appropriate age development and the bouquet is smoky, spicy, meaty and almost slightly fish-oily. Later, beef stock or Bonox. A bit one-dimensional at first. There's a welter of very drying, grippy tannins and the wine seems a little dried-out. The acidity is evident and steely, metallic, the palate flavours ultra-savoury, very developed and mellow with persuasive but rather hard astringency. Is this cork doing its job? Not sure it has enough fruit to balance. It lacks the detail of the 2015 vintage.
