Dottore (Doctor) Matteo Ascheri is not only the 5th generation owner and winemaker of his family estate (established 1880), he also runs a 4 star resort and traditional 'Osteria' (restaurant) next to the winery in Bra. In addition to this, Matteo is the head of the Consorzio di Barolo, which makes all decisions about the future of this unique and highly-regarded region.
The Ascheri Barolo 'Pisapola' is sourced entirely from one of the family's 3 vineyards. Ethereal and elegant bouquet, with ripe fruit, violet and sweet spices notes. The palate is round, harmonious and velvety with an excellent persistence.

More intense red colour. Heady ripe red fruits jump from the glass, then anise and earthy herbs, some oak assistance, and a green bean note. Ripe, round and plush, immediately enjoyable with warm 14.5% abv. Cinnamon spices, cedar and woody tannins. Lacks intensity and longevity of 2013, but only just, and this is splitting hairs. Immediately enjoyable.

Deepish brick-red colour, with a touch of dark chocolate in the complex, robust bouquet which also holds notes of ironstony earth, ferrous touches and more, the palate very full-bodied and powerful, loaded with firm tannins and tight packed density. Long, long carry. A most impressive wine.Medium brick-red colour, typical of nebbiolo at this age, the bouquet very complex, mellow and showing advanced maturity - again not unusual in Barolo. A touch of funky meatiness. Some iron-filings. The wine is very savoury, complex, and drying on the finish with abundant tannins. A finer, less full-bodied style, and quite lovely.

Perfumed, displaying cherry, strawberry, sandalwood, licorice, spice and tobacco aromas and flavours. This is intense and resonates on the long, mineral-and-spice-tinged aftertaste. Shows fine harmony already at this youthful stage. Best from 2022 through 2040.
