Locations

Italy

Italy has some of the oldest wine production methods in the world and almost every part of the country is planted under vine. From the Alps in the north to the very southernmost parts of Sicily where Africa is almost in sight, wine is successfully cultivated. In addition to the latitude covered, Italy's many mountains and hills provide a plethora of altitudes for grape growing in various soils and micro-climates. The extensive coastlines along the peninsula that is Italy provide maritime climates for the coastal wine-growing areas. Over 350 grape varieties are 'authorised' in Italy, though up to 550 varieties are thought to be grown.

The classification system of Italian wines has four classes, with the intention of defining a wine's origin a quality. Two of these classes are table wines, whilst DOC and DOCG fall under the EU quality wine produced in a specific region category. Vino da Tavola (VDT) means that the wine comes from Italy. Most of these wines are generally basic table wines that are consumed domestically. Indicazione Geografica Tipica (IGT) denotes a more specific region within Italy, and the resultant will be of higher quality than simple table wines, but won't conform to the rules required for higher certification. Both Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) and Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) are regionally more specific than IGT, and have stricter rules regarding the grape varieties grown, yields per hectare, minimum alcohol levels and so on. The major difference between DOC and DOCG is that the latter has to undergo a blind-tasting session to ensure the highest quality is achieved. Italy has 32 DOCG appelations, 311 DOC appelations and 120 IGT zones.

Key regions include Piedmont, Tuscany, Abruzzo, Veneto, Sicily and Sardinia. Common white varieties grown are Pinot Grigio, Arneis, Vermentino, Verdicchio, Fiano and Moscato. The red varieties grown the most are Sangiovese, Barbera, Dolcetto, Nebbiolo, Montepulciano, Primitivo, Nero d'Avola and Corvina.

Trentino

Nestled in the lower foothills of the Alps, Trentino is a wine region in northern Italy. It sits directly south of its wine-producing neighbour Alto Adige. With a moderate continental climate, Trentino enjoys short, dry summers (though daytime temperatures can get quite high) and experiences low rainfall throughout its growing season. Thanks to its more southerly latitude, lower-altitude vineyards, and the protection afforded by the mountains against the cooling influences of glacial Lake Garda, the climate in the vineyards of Trentino is slightly warmer than that of Alto Adige. However, the region also experiences a broad diurnal range, with cold air coming down from the mountains at night-time. These cold nights do help the grapes retain their natural acidity, lengthen the growing season, and enable flavours to intensify in the grapes. The region is home to both native and international grape varieties, with many of the resulting wines single-variety wines. Also, much of the production focuses on dry, unoaked white wines, such as Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, and Müller-Thurgau. The region grows vast quantities of Pinot Grigio – its most planted variety – and the best of these wines display true depth of flavour. Trentino Chardonnay grapes go into the region’s dry, bottle-fermented metodo classico sparkling wine: Trento Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC). Red-wine production includes Teroldego – the most common black-grape variety – as well as Merlot and Marzemino. Cooperatives currently produce more than 80% of Trentino’s wines.

About the brand Alois Lageder - Cantina Riff

The aim and impetus for the Cantina Riff project is to produce premium quality wines, with distinctive character and style, unquestionable quality and extraordinary market value. The Riff – project has been initiated about ten years ago as a négociant-operation by the acclaimed Alois Lageder winery. In producing this independent brand, the Lageder winery team calls on its long–standing grower relationships, and winemaking and marketing expertise and credibility. The wines are produced and selected on-site near the vineyards of their origin and then blended and bottled at the Lageder winery.

The Riff project builds on long-term partnerships with selected grape growers in Italy’s northeastern Tre Venezie region, which has long been known as one of Italy’s prime sources for elegant and refined white wines and expressive, well-balanced red wines. The grapes for the Riff wines are grown in the northeastern Tre Venezie region, in vineyards that are located in the valleys and on the slopes of the Northeastern Italian Alps, which influence the climate and bless the area with priced alluvial soils.
