Akarua
Akarua is a standout among the dress circle of fine wine in Central Otago. First planted in 1996, solid expansion has seen the winery grow to encompass 100 hectares over prime sites in Felton Road and Lowburn. Akarua produced its first vintage in 1999 and over time, as vine age has increased along with knowledge of the intricacies of the vineyards, quality has been on the rise year on year. Since Akarua Pinot Noir’s first trophy was awarded in 2002 by Air New Zealand Wine Awards, a trophy has been awarded for each vintage it has released since 2009.
Akarua released its sparkling wine range in 2011 in collaboration with sparkling wine specialist Tony Jordan, which has become the perfect complement to its existing portfolio of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Pinot Rosé, and Riesling. Today, Akarua is under second generation family leadership of David Skeggs, with award-winning winemaker Andrew Keenleyside heading up the winemaking team.
